Hi Bob & Janette.
We have noticed your comments a few times on trip advisor so thought we would pick your brains, if this is alright? You seem well travelled around SE Asia so hoped you could assist with our uncertainty.
We are travelling to Thailand (via Dubai) in July, first to Bangkok for 3 nights then we have 4 nights free before heading to Koh Samui for 10 days, then over to Dubai for 3 nights en route home to Scotland.
We are a bit unsure what to do with our free time between Bangkok and Koh Samui and at the moment we are considering Chiang Mai, Singapore or Cambodia. Obviously they are all very different but we really can't decide where to go!!! (decisions decisions).
Can you advise on your experiences where you enjoyed the most?
Many thanks
K&D
Bob's reply: Hi guys,
My recommendation would be either to visit Chiang Mai or Siem Reap in Cambodia. You can fly to either destination very economically if you pre-book with AirAsia online. Only 15kg baggage allowance so pre-pay for extra if you don't travel lite.
You 4 days is about the right amount of time for either location.
Siem Reap is awesome, friendly people, US$20 visa on arrival, bring passport photos.
Chiang Mai, laid back, great night markets, elephant camps, cooking classes etc.
It is a tough choice but if your not heading back this way I would probably do the Temples at Siem Ream. Absotuley awesome.
Cheers

Hi Bob & Janette
Thanks for posting the info regarding the "Friday Night Socials" and we are spending the free time we have to cruise the rest of your informative site.
Looked at your link page and saw Reet's link on there and she was just with us at the BBQ on the 24th. of April when we had to hastely forced to change the venue and dining day too Saturday.
This week Cathy & Gary arrive with their first BBQ this trip on Friday but next week on the 13th. we have to change too Saturday again due to the regular place being closed again. Reet was with us at "Don's" for the Saturday BBQ and all of the people told us that although it was a bit more expensive they thought it was better due to the venue and quality of the food.
As of August the 1st. the Friday Night Socials will be permanently changed too Saturdays and the location will be just down the road 150 meters at Don'.
Sorry we did not have much of a chance to chat due to all of the other guests at the dinner on Friday and looking forward to having a chat and a beer when you get back to Phuket.
Regards From Richard & Megumi
Bob's reply: Hi guys,
We had a great time and will certainly book another evening with you when we get back to Phuket in a few weeks.
Look forward to a chat and sharing a Chang or two.
Cheers

Hi there! i love reading your travel journals. And I find the travel tips very useful. I, myself, am planning to go on a trip to KL, Thailand and Cambodia. Which is why I wanna ask a question about road travel. You mentioned you took a 4-hour coach ride from Butterworth,Penang to KL? Would you remember the name of the train/coach company? Thanks so much and happy traveling!
roxanne
Bob's reply: Hi Roxanne,
Bus travel is quite easy to arrange in Malaysia. The coach was caught from the Butterworth Ferry terminal and only cost about RM12. The buses leave every 30 minutes or so and run all day and well into the evening. Just show up and buy your ticket. You will get dropped off at the Putarya Bus terminal near Chinatown in KL.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Bob
PS Hope to visit the Philippines in the near future.

Hi Bob and Janette!!!
My name is Eric and I have an unhealthy obsession with your web page... ITS AMAZING!!!
Its on my favourites and I haven't stopped raving about it to all my friends. My good friend Jemima is now also a HUGE fan as a result. I am going to Cambodia in September with my girlfriend and plan to follow the same route as you did!
Thanks for all the tips and especially the comments
Eric
p.s. Bob has a charming smile....
Bob's reply: Thanks for your kind words Eric. I hope you love Cambodia as we did. The people are extremely charming. Make sure you do the happy hour cocktails at Raffles in PP and do have a BBQ dinner on the beach one night at Sihanoukville for us. Standby for our next trip to Phuket area in a few weeks and then Laos at the end of the year :)
Happy & safe travels
Bob

Hi Guys
Just wanted to say how much I like your website. When I've been researching travel destinations, I've often wished I could just look at a all the photos first instead of navigating through website after website and reading all the blarb.
Some friends and I are planning on visiting Vietnam in November and besides Halong Bay didn't know where else to go. After looking at your pics I think Hoi An looks lovely.
Keep up the good work
Tracey
Bob's reply: Thanks Tracey, I'm glad you found our site useful. We really loved Hoi An and am sure you will too.
